Blending Culture and Contemporary Design:
The Newark, NJ Hispanic Research and Information Center
Multi-Use Lounge & Study Area
Designed by OCA Architects, the site was renovated within the landmarked library to be open and welcoming, a space to balance quiet study and community. The newly designed lounge area serves as a warm, welcoming hub — a place where visitors can explore Hispanic culture. In-Site Interior Design was brought in to add cultural flavor. Initial inspiration for the space was the library’s unique archive of 1970s Latin American original poster and book art. The color palette and graphic elements were developed to provide a rich background for the colorful murals within the seating niches. Layered lighting and comfortable seating clusters provide designated areas within the space, a modern atmosphere that encourages both private and communal gatherings. Events such as author readings, book signings, and movie screenings will take place as the flexible furniture allows for large group seating.

Children’s Corner
The children’s section of the HRIC is a vibrant world of its own — playful, imaginative, and intentionally scaled for young learners. In this space, we used bold colors, tactile materials. The raised platform seating will support everything from quiet learning to interactive storytelling. One important decorative accent was the use of custom wall decals featuring native Hispanic animals, creating an exciting focal feature with an interactive learning opportunity. Cozy reading areas and smaller furniture make the space engaging and accessible, encouraging curiosity at every turn. Here, the children are given a comforting community space and the opportunity to explore and discover. With this design, we set out to create a dynamic space, an inclusive environment that sparks learning, creativity, and connection for all ages.
